One possible version:
Dear Sara,
I’m glad to receive your letter. Thanks for your caring for the weather and my health. Now I’d like to tell you something about the smog in Jiangxi.
Up to now, the smog has occurred many times, which has done great harm to our daily life. Many traffic accidents have happened. Quite a lot of flights have to be put off. Many people have to stay at home for fear of the poisonous air caused by the smog.
People have realized the great harm caused by the smog and the importance of protecting the environment. People are taking measures to reduce the smog weather. The government suggests people go to work or school with the public traffic. Also we should plant more trees.
As for me, I’ll go to school by bike or on foot. In addition, I will tell people around to protect the environment as possible as they can. Would you like to tell me some good ideas?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours
Lily
聽(tīng)力原文
Tex 1
M: Do you want the same cut as last time?
W: The same on top, but I’d like it a little longer over the ears and in the back.
Text 2
M: Did you hear that they are going to build a first-class hotel here, with furnished rooms, wooden stairs
and a good restaurant.
W: Oh, no. It’s going to ruin the neighborhood. They’ll have to tear down all those nice old houses.
Text 3
W: What jobs have you done in the last ten years?
M: Many kinds of jobs. I was once an engineer and later a teacher. Up till now, I have been an official for three years.
Text 4
W: I’m considering dropping my dancing class. I’m not making any progress.
M: If I were you, I’d stick with it. It’s definitely worth time and efforts.
W: Thank you so much. I will go ahead.
Text 5
M: I usually walk to work. What about you? Do you get to work by bus?
W: No, I used to get to work by bus. But now, I ride my bike. I can get more exercise.
Text 6
M: What are you looking for?
W: My paper. I put it somewhere last night and I can’t find it now.
M: Did you finish typing it yesterday?
W: Yes. I kept on typing it until midnight, but it is lost.
M: Have you searched your drawers and the shelf?
W: I’ve searched everywhere. Where on earth did I put it?
M: Don’t get upset over it. At least you have another week to go.
W: I have been working on it for three weeks and it’s too late to write another. Just think of my hard
work that goes for nothing.
M: Cheer up. What I meant was that you can find it sometime during the week. There is no need to write
a new one. Oh, what’s this? Is this your paper?
W: Oh, yes. Where did you find it?
M: You’ve put it among these journals on the desk.
W: My poor memory.
Text 7
M: In fact, I couldn’t sleep last night because Martin was making so much noise. He should turn his
radio down at night. He’s so clumsy, too. He never does anything quietly.
W: Was it Martin’s turn to cook the meal tonight?
M: Yes, it was! He should have washed the dishes last night too, but he didn’t.
W: He’s so lazy.
M: I’m fed up with him. He’s left all his clothes and shaving things in the bathroom again. It looks like a
Building site!
W: If he cleaned his room and tidied the bathroom more often, he would be a pleasanter person to live
with.
Text 8
M: Jane, I’ve quit my job.
W: Really? Why?
M: It’s complicated. This company is small and many workers have been dismissed last month and I
can’t continue working for a company that may let me go.
W: But surely they wouldn’t fire you! You’re one of the most experienced managers here!
M: Well, to be honest, I’ve gotten a better offer.
W: That’s great news! Congratulations! Where will you be located?
M: The head office is in New York, but I’ll be dealing with overseas companies. I look forward to that
and at the same time having a chance to use English more.
W: I’m sorry to bring this up now, but would it be possible for you to write me a letter of
recommendation before you go?
M: Of course I can. In fact, if there are any other job opportunities at this company, I’ll recommend you
personally.
W: Thanks. I appreciate that.
Text 9
M: I hate to see women sitting down all day with their heads buried in their hands.
W: Do you want me to put my needlework away?
M: You bet!
W: I’m putting forth a lot of effort to make this tablecloth. You always complain about whatever you see
me doing. I can’t put up with it anymore.
M: I’m sorry, honey. Please forgive my bad temper. I was putting a machine together today, and I had
problems with it. I’m tired. Will you please forgive me?
W: This time I will, but please don’t put me down anymore.
M: Honey. I’ve put aside some money that I earned by doing some extra mechanical work. Would you
like to go out to dinner tonight, just the two of us?
W: How exciting! I’ll take a shower and put on my best dress.
Text 10
W: Let me start out by giving you an example. Arden Textile is a company that makes sports clothes. The company was started in 1906, and is still owned by the Arden family. In December 2003, a terrible fire destroyed the company’s largest factory, and the company had to close. More than 1000 workers lost their jobs. The company’s insurance paid for the loss. The Arden family talked about building a new factory overseas, where costs are lower. But instead they decided to rebuild the factory. During the rebuilding, the company gave all the workers their regular pay. This caused great financial problems for the company, and they almost went out of business.
Did the company do the right thing? Many people said yes, because Arden Textile helped their employees. The company’s president was on many TV programs, and received an award from the Prime Minister. But other people said no. They said the main responsibility of a business is to make profits, and that’s how it helps society the most.
We will discuss this case in more detail next time. Your reading assignment is Page 5 to 17 in your textbook.
